We in the Pest Control industry are experiencing a shifting paradigm.
This is redefining the size of vehicle it takes to perform our services. First, the
current is to move away from high liquid "spray" applications to a granular or bait treatment.
Therefore, needed are smaller tanks and greater secured storage. Second, like most business,
attracting good employees at times proves difficult. In the past, the "spraying" required
large hoses to be dragged by reasonably muscular employees. Now with more "thinking" and
less strength required, the industry can use a greater range of society for our employees.
A large part of the employee pool does not want OR know how to drive a medium duty truck
which requires a class D license. Third, the pest control industry is trying to create an
image of professionals and not as tradesmen, therefore, vehicle image is critical to us.
Finally, to expand business we need to increase the quantity and size of our routes, but
this is very expensive. To grow we need to pay the cost of adding a new office and office
staff in a new town or the other side of a city before the revenue comes in from this expansion,
therefore, we get locked between growth and cost.
